NFL head coach rumor sparks speculation about Mike Tomlin-Pittsburgh Steelers split image

The NFL head coaching carousel for the 2026 offseason is already underway, as the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants have already fired their head coaches, and many more coaches around the league are on the hot seat heading into the final stretch of the season.

There is still a ton of time before the carousel officially opens in January, but the rumors continue to fly around. The most recent rumor comes from NFL insider Josina Anderson, and it could have major implications for Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to Anderson, a longtime head coach around the league is considering leaving his franchise and seeking a fresh start. Though no name was mentioned, speculation has risen that Anderson is talking about Tomlin.

"There's a longtime NFL head coach out there who is considering wanting a change of scenery & has told others of these thoughts," Anderson said on X. "If he acts on those lingering feelings, his departure would clearly add to the list of vacancies."

Tomlin has been Pittsburgh's head coach for 19 years and has consistently put together winning teams. However, the Steelers haven't won a playoff game since the 2016 season, and have been the definition of mediocrity for the last decade.

The playoff win drought doesn't look like it will end this season either. Through 11 games, Pittsburgh is 6-5 and is once again just an average squad in a loaded AFC.

Since reaching their second Super Bowl in 2010, Tomlin and the Steelers have tallied just three playoff wins. Though Tomlin has been one of the better coaches in football since taking over as Pittsburgh's head coach in 2007, a fresh start for both sides is needed.

It's clear that Tomlin has reached his peak with the Steelers. We'll see if the legendary coach and the storied franchise decide to part ways after the 2025 campaign.
