Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers picked up a huge win in the Week 1 opener against the New York Jets.
It was a back-and-forth affair as both the Steelers and Jets impressed on offense and made big plays all day. Aaron Rodgers had as good of a debut as you could have hoped for, completing 22-of-30 passes for 244 yards and four scores.
D.K. Metcalf also enjoyed a nice debut, catching four passes for 83 yards. The hope is that the Rodgers-Metcalf connection will give the Steelers an elite, high-powered offense that's been missing for years now.
However, someone else was the main hero of the day- kicker Chris Boswell. Boswell only made two field goals, but both were impressive. The first field goal was a 56-yarder in the second quarter to put the Steelers up 10-9.
Then, late in the fourth quarter with the Steelers trailing 32-31, Boswell hit a career-high 60-yarder to seal the game for the Steelers. It was a career-long, but Boswell easily put enough leg behind it to make it from 65 yards or so.
After the game, Tomlin was especially complimentary of his elite kicker.
“I can’t say enough about Boz [Boswell],” Tomlin said. “Our kicker is a serial killer, man. He’s got a low pulse rate. He can’t wait to deliver.”
It's usually not a good thing to be described as a "serial killer," but we get what Tomlin was trying to do. Boswell has been incredibly clutch in his career and never seems to get rattled, no matter how big the moment.
"Boz always wants to bang from deep," Tomlin added. "But that's the type of guy you want banging for you under them circumstances."
In 2024, Boswell made the second Pro Bowl appearance of his career. Last season, Boswell 41 of his 44 field goal attempts. The veteran was also a perfect 35-for-35 on extra points, and had a long field goal of 57 yards. No kicker in the league made more field goals than Boswell did in 2024.
Now, thanks to Boswell's incredible leg, the Steelers get to leave Week 1 with a perfect record. That was a crucial win considering the Steelers have matchups against the Seattle Seahawks, New England Patriots, and Minnesota Vikings coming up next.
