If you were hoping to see a heavy dose of Pittsburgh Steelers rookie running back Kaleb Johnson right out of the gate, you're going to be disappointed.
On the Steelers' first depth chart of the season, which was released on Tuesday, Johnson is behind both Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell in the RB3 spot.
And this isn't just for show, either, as Alan Saunders of Steelers Now noted how Johnson has been working behind Gainwell all offseason long.
Johnson had a relatively quiet first offseason, with the highlight being his preseason Week 2 performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, when he tallied 11 carries for 50 yards.
Pittsburgh Steelers RB Depth Chart
RB1 | Jaylen Warren |
RB2 | Kenneth Gainwell |
RB3 | Kaleb Johnson |
The Steelers hope Johnson eventually takes on the Najee Harris role and works in tandem with Warren, who isn't going anywhere after inking a two-year contract extension on Monday.
But for now, it looks like Gainwell will be the secondary option and Johnson will have to make the most of the scraps that are left over.
On the bright side, Gainwell is not some immovable force that can't be surpassed, so it's quite possible Johnson's role increases sooner rather than later.
