Pittsburgh Steelers EDGE rusher T.J. Watt is a generational talent and arguably the best singular defensive player in the NFL.

Watt is also now on the wrong side of 30, and he’s reportedly seeking a contract extension at Myles Garrett’s number of $40 million per year.

Similar to how the Garrett trade-request situation played out with the Cleveland Browns earlier this offseason, reports of a rift between Watt and the Steelers over his contract are most likely being exaggerated. The Browns paid Garrett. The Steelers will almost certainly do the same in short order.

In an alternate universe where Pittsburgh actually puts the face of its franchise on the trade block, Bovada Sports has named the Green Bay Packers and Washington Commanders as the co-favorites to land the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year if he leaves via a blockbuster trade.

Again, this is purely speculation, and the obvious favorite for Watt’s services in 2025 and beyond is the Steelers. But the idea of Watt in a Commanders uniform would be a nightmare for the Philadelphia Eagles and their hopes to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

Washington is largely seen as Philly’s younger brother in the NFC East, and its move to acquire Deebo Samuel in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers this offseason did little to move the needle.

Adding a true game-wrecker like Watt to Dan Quinn’s defense, though, with quarterback Jayden Daniels and all of those weapons on the offensive side? The NFC pecking order wouldn’t automatically change, but the gap between Philly and Washington would thin considerably.

Commanders and Packers fans can certainly dream about their teams acquiring Watt. Eagles fans can rest easy, though, as Pittsburgh’s superstar won’t be changing conferences anytime soon. This is how the game is played, and it typically ends with a record payday for the superstar player.
