The Philadelphia Eagles have made a decision on cornerback Jaire Alexander, which also clears room for the return of fellow cornerback Jakorian Bennett.

The Eagles announced that they have placed Alexander on the reserve/retired list just one day after it was revealed Alexander was stepping away from the team.

In a corresponding move, Philly activated cornerback Jakorian Bennett off injured reserve, clearing his return to the field.

Alexander informed the Eagles that he's stepping away from football in order to get right physically and mentally, according to ESPN's Tim McManus. Alexander is dealing with a knee injury.

"Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Jaire Alexander has decided to step away from football in order to focus on getting right physically and mentally amid his ongoing recovery from offseason knee surgery, a league source confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday," McManus reported on Tuesday.

Philly acquired Alexander in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens right before the deadline, surrendering a seventh-round pick for the veteran cornerback.

While this indicates Alexander is set on retiring, it's important to note that this may just be a temporary move until he decides what step to take next. Alexander can be activated off the list at any time.

Bennett was brought in via trade with the Las Vegas Raiders before the season started. He appeared in three games before landing on IR.

Bennett will now look to carve out a role for himself in the Eagles' secondary. His best bet is grabbing the boundary role opposite Quinyon Mitchell.

His competition will include Kelee Ringo and Adoree' Jackson. The Eagles also acquired Michael Carter ahead of the deadline, but it remains to be seen if Philadelphia will give him a look on the outside.
