Philadelphia sports losses: Inside city's painful night as Eagles, Phillies, Flyers all lose image

Philadelphia fans have experienced some extreme highs over the years, including the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl win in February, but they are conditioned to deal with painful losses.

From the Philadelphia 76ers' constant playoff exits before the conference finals to the Philadelphia Phillies' October disappointments in 2023 and 2024, the city and its sports fans have been through difficult moments before. Few of those moments overlapped quite the way Thursday night's did.

The Eagles, Phillies and Philadelphia Flyers all fell on Thursday. The Phillies' season ended in unbelievable fashion, while the Eagles went down at MetLife Stadium as heavy "Thursday Night Football" favorites. The Flyers, meanwhile, dropped their season opener in uninspiring fashion.

Here's a look inside Philadelphia's night to forget.

Philadelphia sports losses

Much like Bryce Harper and Trea Turner, who went a combined 0-for-9 in Game 4 of the NLDS, Philadelphia is batting .000 of late.

Not only did three teams lose on Thursday night, but the Eagles were already coming off a loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday. A day earlier, Penn State — which has fans all over Pennsylvania — suffered a stunning upset at the hands of winless UCLA.

Here's how it all went down on Thursday.

Phillies lose to Dodgers, 2-1

Phillies fans already knew their team's season might be on borrowed time when Rob Thomson's squad dropped each of the first two games of the NLDS at home, but the Phillies sparked hope with a Game 3 win on Wednesday and had a chance to send the series back east on Thursday.

The Phillies held a brief 1-0 lead in the seventh inning before walking in the game-tying run, and they were hoping to escape a jam and force a 12th inning when chaos ensued. Reliever Orion Kerkering had trouble handling a ground ball by Andy Pages but seemingly recovered in time to throw to first for the third out. Instead, Kerkering inexplicably threw home, sailing the ball well over the head of catcher J.T. Realmuto.

Even a perfect throw might not have been enough to get the out, and Kerkering instantly knew he threw the game — and the season — away in one moment.

Flyers lose to Panthers, 2-1

A loss in game one of 82 is likely much more tolerable than what the Phillies and Eagles did on Thursday, but the Flyers could have thrown Philadelphia fans a bone by winning on the road in their season opener. Instead, the Flyers were out-shot 34-20 by the reigning champion Florida Panthers, giving up the go-ahead goal to Brad Marchand early in the third period and never answering back.

The Flyers have plenty of time to recover, but they only added onto the misery in southeast Pennsylvania on Thursday.

Eagles lose to Giants, 34-17

Surely the Eagles, favored by about a touchdown, could still salvage the day, right?

In a stunner, Philadelphia was blown out by the New York Giants, falling 34-17 on the road to a team with a rookie quarterback and down two key wide receivers. The Eagles let up three touchdowns in the first half and were shut out entirely in the second half, throwing away their best scoring opportunity of the half on Jalen Hurts' first interception of the season.

Saquon Barkley's difficult season continued with only two rushing yards in the second half, and the Eagles suffered their second loss in five days after a 4-0 start.

For Philadelphia fans, this might be the weekend to just watch the replay of Super Bowl 59 over and over.
