The NFL offseason is winding down, as teams are in the midst of preparing for the 2025 season.

At this point in the NFL calendar, the NFL is in its "OTA" phase, which is one of the key points of the offseason. While players aren't necessarily required to attend these practices, they are still important parts of the year as teams begin their preparations for the season.

However, CBA rules put limitations on how often teams can schedule OTA practices around Mandatory Minicamps in the middle of June. These practices also happen intermittently instead of continuously over the next few weeks.

Here's what you need to know about OTAs this year.

What does OTA mean in football?

"OTA" is short for "Organized Team Activities," and is a term that essentially encompasses NFL practices during the quieter springtime. Teams are allowed to officially practice, getting players and coaches together ahead of training camp this Summer.

All OTAs are voluntary, as players are allowed to skip the event based on the current CBA, but most players attend anyway. Typically, players who don't participate in OTAs either have injuries or are in the middle of contract disputes.

Additionally, as per the CBA, teams can schedule up to 10 OTA practices each year, usually taking place before mandatory minicamps in the middle of June. On a few occasions, teams will also hold OTAs after Mandatory Minicamps to fill out their schedule.

There are many restrictions on these practices, with the biggest difference between OTAs and other practices being that no contact is allowed in OTAs.

NFL key offseason dates 2025

Besides OTAs, there are a few other key dates in the NFL before the season begins.

After Mandatory Minicamp, July 15th is the deadline for teams to sign players on franchise tags to extensions. This year, the only player who qualifies for this is Chiefs' guard Trey Smith.

Training Camp will begin in late July, with the Hall of Fame taking place on July 31st between the Lions and Chargers. At that point, all NFL teams should be fully into their training camps.
