NFL HQ shooting updates: Latest news on fatal attack in Manhattan office building image

Three civilians and one police officer were killed when a gunman fired shots at 345 Park Avenue, a glitzy building that houses some of the city's top firms — including the NFL.

At least four people were shot during the incident, NBC News reported. The New York Police Department warned people to avoid the area, located in the heart of Manhattan's Midtown district.

Here's the latest on the situation.

Latest updates on shooting in Manhattan office building that houses NFL HQ

One police officer and three civilians were shot and killed in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening.

The suspected shooter, identified as 27-year old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, is dead, believed to have turned the gun on themselves on the 33rd floor of the 345 Park Ave. building, ABC 7 NY and the New York Post reported. The 634-foot skyscraper houses NFL headquarters as well as financial investment firm Blackstone, among other businesses.

“The scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said on social media. Surveillance footage showed a man walking into the building armed with what looks like an assault rifle, per NBC 4 New York.

An NFL employee was seriously injured, according to a memo sent out by league commissioner Roger Goodell:

One of our employees was seriously injured in this attack. He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition. NFL staff are at the hospital and we are supporting his family. We believe that all of our employees are otherwise safe and accounted for, and the building has nearly been cleared.

Goodell added that "We believe that all of our employees are otherwise safe and accounted for," and confirmed that there will be an increased security presence at NFL HQ for the coming days and weeks.

The employee has been identified as Craig Clementi, who works in the league's finance department. Clementi was struck in the back by a bullet that may have ricocheted before hitting him, The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported through a high-ranking source in the NFL.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams said on MSNBC that "We have reason to believe that he was focused on the NFL agency that was located in the building."

During an appearance on "Good Day New York," Adams added that the shooter is believed to have intended to go to the NFL offices but "appeared to have gone to the wrong floor." Rather than going to the NFL offices, the suspected shooter ended up on the floor of Rudin Management.

Investment firm Blackstone confirmed that executive Wesley LePatner was one of the victims killed in Monday's shooting.

Who is Shane Tamura?

Tamura is the suspect who is alleged to have shot and killed four people on Monday. He is believed to have turned the gun on himself, dying by suicide at 27 years old.

Tamura carried a note that made references to the NFL and claimed he suffered from CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The note also requested that his brain be studied.

"Terry Long football gave me CTE and it caused me to drink a gallon of antifreeze," the note stated, per sources. Tamura added that “You can’t go against the NFL, they’ll squash you.”

“Please study brain for CTE. I’m sorry. The league knowingly concealed the dangers to our brains to maximize profits. They failed us."

Tamura played high school football and had a documented mental health history, according to Tisch. He had two Mental Health Crisis Holds in his background, according to law enforcement sources.

He is believed to have arrived in New York City just hours before the shooting after driving cross-country from Nevada.

The note references Terry Long, an offensive lineman for the Steelers from 1984 to 1991, who died by suicide in 2005 after consuming a gallon of antifreeze. An autopsy revealed Long had CTE.

A living person cannot receive a confirmed CTE diagnosis, though doctors may suspect it. It can, however, be confirmed through an autopsy by specialists who look for specific changes in the brain.
