Najee Harris eye injury, explained: How 'fireworks mishap' led to Chargers RB missing start of training camp image

The Chargers are without one of their newest additions to kick off preseason play.

Jim Harbaugh's bunch absorbed a crushing blow in early July when newcomer Najee Harris sustained an eye injury during a fireworks mishap in California during an Independence Day celebration. Harris, who recently inked a one-year contract with the franchise, has yet to formally return to the field, although he retains a presence at Los Angeles' practices.

The details surrounding Harris' wound are murky, but the moment's impact could linger long for a Chargers side hoping to mount a challenge for postseason berth in 2025.

With that, here's the latest on Harris' eye injury.

Najee Harris eye injury, explained

Harris was struck down by an eye injury in the early-morning hours of July 5, a malady that came about in the strangest of circumstances.

The 27-year-old RB celebrated the holiday in his native Antioch, Calif. During the festivities, a stray spark flew into Harris' eye. He sustained a "superficial eye injury" as a result of the incident, which reportedly injured more than one person.

Harris, who inked a one-year, $5.25 million contract with the Bolts in the offseason, is expected to make a full recovery. Head coach Jim Harbaugh acknowledged that there remains no timetable for Harris' return to practice, per ESPN's Kris Rhim. The Alabama alum was placed on the active/non-football injury on July 17. He's attended a few practices in the weeks since his malady, typically sporting practice shorts and a t-shirt — not pads.

Until Harris returns, fans can expect first-round pick Omarion Hampton to get the lion's share of first-team reps.

Harris enters the year as the likely No. 1 in the Chargers' backfield. His position at the top is under threat, though. Los Angeles invested a first-round pick in Hampton, a telltale sign that the Bolts view him as a future star.
