Micah Parsons contract dispute, explained: Comments from owner Jerry Jones, VP Stephen Jones raise eyebrows image

Training camp's arrival has proven a godsend for some, with its lush fields and glimmering skies backdropping glint contract offers.

For others, it's an albatross, a scorned affair in which disputes over fair pay are misrepresented within newspaper columns.

That's the scenario Cowboys EDGE Micah Parsons finds himself in. Dallas' pass-rushing supernova has been nothing if not prolific since making the leap to the professional game from Penn State.

The Cowboys' front office appears to have other views, however. Executive vice president Stephen Jones appeared to say as much during a contentious and confounding statement to reporters on Sunday afternoon.

Here's what you need to know.

Micah Parsons contract situation, explained

Jones asserted that Dallas' front office wants to fill Parsons' pockets with gold and silver. It's just not convinced that Parsons wants that for himself.

"We want to pay Micah, too. He’s gotta want to be paid," Stephen Jones said Sunday, per The Athletic's Jon Machota.

Given Parsons' production as of late, it's hard to imagine that he wouldn't want to earn a mammoth paycheck. It's also hard to imagine he wouldn't fetch one. Perhaps Jones' comments affirm that desire.

Or perhaps Jones is calling upon his three-time All-Pro EDGE to make it clear without a doubt that he deserves whichever terms he's seeking.

Jones' remarks are unclear at best and cryptic at worse. Of all the celestial objects that twinkle in Dallas' locker room, few — if any — have been as effective as Parsons since he entered the league. The idea that he has something doesn't appear to have any sort of factual backing to it, as Parsons has the fifth-most sacks in the league since making his NFL debut in 2021 (52.5).

Nevertheless, Joens — and his father — are the ones writing the check. Only time will tell if their hesitation will limit Parsons' earning potential.

'Pay Micah' chants, explained

The Joneses were greeted with a cruel sight — and sound — on Saturday as fans pooled into makeshift concourses at the team's practice facility in Oxnard, Calif.

"Pay Micah," the crowd yelled, its frustration palpable at Dallas' braintrust and its apparent disinterest in locking down its star EDGE to a big-money deal.

It was a familiar refrain, said Jerry Jones, not all that dissimilar to the ones chanted when CeeDee Lamb was negotiating a long-term extension with the side.

"Really, I don't have anything to comment there at all," Jerry Jones said. "Just no comment."

At the start of training camp, Jerry Jones expressed doubt that Parsons could stay healthy for a whole season. He's missed five games in his professional career — four of which came last season. In the process of leveling his complaint, Jerry Jones also took aim at Dak Prescott, who the Cowboys locked up to the biggest deal in league history in terms of average annual value.

"Just because we sign him doesn’t mean we’re going to have him," Jones said. "He was hurt six games last year. Seriously. I remember signing a player for the highest-paid at the position in the league, and he got knocked out two-thirds of the year — Dak Prescott.

"So, there’s a lot of things you can think about, just as the player does, when you’re thinking about committing and guaranteeing money.”

On Tuesday, Jones reiterated that the front office hasn't had any contact with Parsons since he requested a trade late on Aug. 1, per ESPN's Ed Werder.

In all likelihood, Parsons will command money that rivals — or exceeds — the $40 million+ AAV deals that Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt landed in the offseason. Whether that's in Dallas or elsewhere remains to be seen, however.
