Lions vs. Buccaneers final score, results: Jahmyr Gibbs tallies over 200 scrimmage yards as Lions stifle Baker Mayfield and Buccaneers image

JUMP TO:

The Lions offense has been one of the top in the NFL for three years, and in the 2025 season have been averaging over 31 points per game. On again on Monday Night Football against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Detroit showed just how electric they can be.

Though the Lions did not score their season average, they tallied 379 total yards from scrimmage in a 24-9 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Detroit scored two touchdowns in the first half, both from Jahymr Gibbs, including a season-long 78-yard run; it was the longest touchdown run by a Lion in 14 years.

On the other side, Kelvin Sheppard's defense made Baker Mayfield — who has been as elite as they come in 2025 — struggle throughout the night, forcing two turnovers on an offense that was averaging 27 points per game going into the contest. Mayfield finished with 228 yards, a touchdown and an interception, and the Buccaneers were hold to a season-low nine points; the three points they scored in the first half was also Tampa Bay’s lowest of the season.

In a battle between two NFC heavyweights, Detroit came out victorious behind Gibbs and co.’s performance on offense and forcing the turnovers necessary. Both teams now sit at 5-2 on the season.

End of the fourth quarter: Lions 24, Buccaneers 9

10:19 p.m.:  In the battle between two contenders, Detroit comes out victorious.

The Lions offense was the more consistent one all night.

10:12 p.m.:  The Lions defensive line has been dominant all night, and once again it gets to Mayfield on a 2nd & 10 for an 11 yard sack.

Two plays later on a 4th & 21, Mayfield hits Ryan Miller, but it is way short of the line to gain and the Lions can almost ice out the game.

10:11 p.m.:  After a Detroit drive that did nothing, Mayfield and co. Got the ball back with over three minutes remaining. On the first play, he hits Egbuka for 30 yards down to the Detroit 37.

The rookie wide receiver has four receptions for 58 yards tonight.

10:04 p.m.:  The third time's the charm for the Lions defense on fourth down.

On 4th & 8, Mayfield tries finding Egbuka in the back of the end zone, but there are two defenders on him. The rookie wide receiver never really stood a chance.

The Lions have the ball back, up 15, with 4:25 remaining.

10:01 p.m.:  The next set of downs, the Buccaneers were faced with another fourth down. This time, it's a pass interference call on Arthur Maulet to keep the drive going.

Tampa Bay is right outside the 10 yard line.

10:00 p.m.:  Tampa Bay is driving, with Mayfield going to one of his go-to targets, Otton, for seven yards on fourth down. The Buccaneers are now in the red zone.

9:54 p.m.:  The Buccaneers desperately needed to convert on a 3rd & 10, and they do, with Mayfield hitting Johnson over the middle of the field for 13 yards.

Lions 24, Buccaneers 9

9:45 p.m. FIELD GOAL:  On a 3rd & 10 from the Buccaneers 41, Goff tries connecting with Jameson Williams deep, but he overthrows him. Detroit has to settle for a field goal, and Bates hits it, this time from 58 yards out.

9:39 p.m.:  The Buccaneers were facing a 4th & 4 in their own territory, and down 12 have to go for it.

Mayfield evades pressure in the pocket and hits Otton in the middle of the field. But, Otton was short of the marker, giving the ball back to Detroit.

The Lions still lead 21-9.

9:28 p.m.: Detroit was driving, but stalls out on the Tampa Bay 45. Goff tries to hit St. Brown, who has cooled off since his hot first quarter, on the left side. But, it comes up incomplete.

9:26 p.m.:  Though it wasn't his longest or flashiest play of the night, Gibbs just made another huge play.

This time, it comes on 4th & 1, where he gets hit behind the line of scrimmage but muscles forward for a first down.

End of the third quarter: Lions 21, Buccaneers 9

9:21 p.m.:  Detroit has a first down after Goff hits tight end Sam LaPorta on a 3rd & 8 right by the sticks. LaPorta has not done much tonight, because he comes up big for a gain.

9:14 p.m.:  The Buccaneers are down 12 and on third down, Mayfield tries hitting Egbuka but he overthrows him. Tampa Bay is forced to punt back to the Lions after scoring on the first drive.

Lions 21, Buccaneers 9

9:08 p.m. TOUCHDOWN: This game has been all about Jahmyr Gibbs.

It started with Gibbs having his first big carry of the second half, which goes for 15 yards to the Tampa Bay 36.

A few plays later, he catches a pass from Goff and takes it for 28 yards. A play later, he takes a halfback dive in for a touchdown.

Gibbs has over 200 scrimmage yards on the night.

Lions 14, Buccaneers 9

8:59 p.m. TOUCHDOWN:  The Buccaneers get on the board via a rookie wideout, but it's not Emeka Egbuka.

Rather, it's former Oregon wide receiver Tez Johnson, who Mayfield hits on a screen pass. Johnson finds his way to the endzone, which included him hurdling over a defender.

This is the second straight week with a touchdown for the rookie. Tampa Bay goes for two on the conversion but it fails.

8:58 p.m.: Down 11, Tampa Bay opts to go for it on a 4th & 2. It's Mayfield handing it off to White, who muscles forward to keep the drive moving.

8:52 p.m.:  Egbuka has been a sensation in his first season in the NFL, and he has the Buccaneers first big play of the second half.

Mayfield hits the rookie wide receiver on a crosser for 18 yards.

8:51 p.m.:  Detroit has kicked off to begin the second half.

Mayfield and Tampa Bay get the first drive, down 11.

8:47 p.m.:  At halftime, its a tale of two offenses and turnovers. The Lions and Buccaneers have each turned over the ball twice, but Detroit is outgaining Tampa Bay 275 yards to 58. Tampa Bay has also dealt with a major injury in Evans.

If the Buccaneers want to get back into this game, it has to be because of Mayfield.

Halftime: Lions 14, Buccaneers 3

8:37 p.m. FIELD GOAL:  The Buccaneers are able to get on the board before halftime, with Chase McLaughlin hitting a 53-yard field goal to cut the lead to 11 at halftime.

8:34 p.m.: Every time the Lions get into opponent territory, they can't twist the dagger. This time, Goff throws an interception to Jamel Dean and Tampa Bay takes back over.

Each team has turned the ball over twice this half.

8:28 p.m.: Detroit gets the ball right back, with Arthur Maulet stealing it from Otton's hands as the two go to the ground for an interception. Detroit takes over in Tampa Bay territory.

8:26 p.m.:  The Lions are unable to add to the lead, with Jake Bates attempting a 54 yard field goal and missing wide left.

Though the Lions have outplayed the Buccaneers for the majority of this half, it is only 7-0.

8:22 p.m.:  According to ESPN's Lisa Salters, Evans has been ruled out with a concussion. A brutal injury for someone who is in their first game back.

8:19 p.m.:  Detroit had to punt after being backed in its own territory, but on the first play for Tampa Bay, Amik Robertson punches out the football from Sterling Shephard and the Lions fall on the fumble.

Detroit forces its first turnover of the night and is set up in Tampa Bay territory.

8:15 p.m.:  The Lions defense has showed up in the first half, and now, they get to Mayfield again for the second time tonight.

Tampa Bay is forced to punt again with 4:13 remaining. It would be the first time this season that the Buccaneers are held scoreless in the first half.

8:11 p.m.:  Evans returned to action after three games out with a hamstring injury, but he just suffered another one.

Mayfield tried hitting him deep and Evans stayed down on the turf. He eventually got up and was helped off by trainers.

Lions 14, Buccaneers 0

8:07 p.m. TOUCHDOWN:  Jahmyr Gibbs is one of the most electric players in football, and here, he shows why.

Right after the penalty, Gibbs breaks loose on a halfback dive, and nobody was going to catch him in a foot race.

It went for 78 yards, Detroit's longest play of the season.

8:06 p.m.:  It's the second time tonight a Buccaneers' penalty on third down keeps the drive moving for Detroit.

Here, it's an illegal contact penalty on Jamel Dean.

7:57 p.m.:  On a 3rd & 6 at the 50, Mayfield tries going for Evans on the right sideline, and while Evans catches it, he does not get two feet down.

It was Rock Ya-Sin, who was called for the earlier pass interference penalty, who was in coverage.

7:55 p.m.: The Buccaneers have their first passing first down of the game, with Mayfield hitting tight end Cade Otton by the left hashes.

7:50 p.m.:  Tampa Bay has been able to get to get to Goff, and now they have its first sack of the night. SirVocea Dennis goes in between the left tackle and guard and brings down No. 16, and Tampa Bay has the ball back.

Neither team has scored since the first drive of the game.

7:47 p.m.:  Detroit has been able to pick up big yardage on every drive so far, and it happens again on the first play of drive No. 4. Goff hits David Montgomery on a halfback screen, and Montgomery turns upfield for 15 yards.

7:43 p.m.:  The Buccaneers punt for the third straight drive to open the game, after Alim McNeil gets his hand on the ball and deflects it into the backfield on a 3rd & 3.

7:40 p.m.:  The Buccaneers have their first chunk of yards of the game, but it comes on a pass interference penalty.

Mayfield tries to hit Evans down the left sideline, and he almost caught it. The penalty on Rock Ya-Sin moves the ball 27 yards.

End of the first quarter: Lions 7, Buccaneers 0

7:36 p.m.:  At the end of one, Detroit has a 7-0 lead.

The Lions have outgained Tampa Bay 160 yards to 15, but two crucial stops by the Buccaneers defense have kept the game within a score.

7:35 p.m.:  Though the Lions have been in Buccaneers territory every drive, they have only converted once. Dan Campbell opted to go for it on 4th & 2, but it was unsuccessful, with Goff overthrowing rookie wideout Isaac TeSlaa in the end zone.

The Buccaneers have forced one turnover and a turnover on downs.

7:32 p.m.:  St. Brown already has three catches of over 10 yards in this game. This time it's for 16 yards on 2nd & 7 to get a new set of downs.

A few plays later, Goff hits Gibbs for his second reception over 20 yards to get down to the 26.

7:26 p.m.:  Facing a 3rd & 7, Mayfield hits Rachaad White on a screen pass, but the back is immediately wrapped up by star linebacker Jack Campbell.

Campbell had over 100 tackles in 2024 and leads the team in tackles this season.

7:20 p.m.:  Tampa Bay's defense just came up huge, forcing the first turnover of the night.

On third down, Yaya Diaby got to Goff in the backfield, and he fumbles it and Tampa Bay recovers. Mayfield and co. Take over at the 40.

7:19 p.m.:  The Lions' second drive starts the same way as the first, with Goff hitting St. Brown for long yardage. This time it goes for 24 yards to get down to the Tampa Bay 41.

7:15 p.m.:  The Buccaneers stall out on drive one, with Mayfield hitting Sterling Shephard on third down short of the sticks.

Detroit has the ball back past the 30.

7:12 p.m.:  Baker and Mayfield and co. Are on the field for the first time starting from the 15-yard line.

On the return, Tez Johnson returned it past midfield, but it was called back for a penalty.

Lions 7, Buccaneers 0

7:08 p.m. TOUCHDOWN:  One drive, one score.

Detroit strikes first, and it's the primary connection from Goff to Amon-Ra St. Brown. The superstar wide receiver got open on a crossing route from right to left, and strolled in for a 27-yard score.

The Lions strike first blood.

7:07 p.m.:  The Lions have the first chunk play of the game, with Goff hitting Jahymr Gibbs out in the backfield, and Gibbs cuts on a dime to go for 30 yards.

7:06 p.m.:  The Lions faced a 3rd & 6, and Goff tries to find Khalif Raymond in the slot. Though it went incomplete, a pass interference penalty on Tampa Bay keeps the drive going.

7:03 p.m.:  Tampa Bay has kicked off and we are underway in Detroit.

Two of the league's top teams go at it in game one of two of the night.

7:00 p.m.:  We are moments away from kickoff in one of the most anticipated games of the week.

The Buccaneers (5-1) and Lions (4-2) are both Super Bowl contenders in the NFC, and tonight, one of them leaves with a statement win.

6:44 p.m.:  One of the main matchups of tonight is the quarterback battle between Baker Mayfield and Jared Goff.

Goff and Mayfield are both top seven in the NFL in touchdowns with 14 and 12, respectively.

6:30 p.m.:  Teams are on the field for warmups.

The Lions are wearing their alternate black uniforms for the contest.
