Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said after Week 10 that his players didn't believe their season was over. After a 16-13 overtime win over the Washington Commanders in Madrid on Sunday, the Dolphins have every reason to hold onto hope.

It certainly wasn't pretty for Miami, which dealt with severe red zone struggles and nearly gave the game away to the Commanders late in the fourth quarter. Trying to take advantage of a muffed punt, the Dolphins were stuffed three times at the goal line — including once on fourth down, when a field goal to take the lead might have been the safer option.

The Dolphins' defense held on the other end, but barely. Miami let Washington sneak into fringe field goal range, only for Matt Gay's attempt at a go-ahead field goal miss from 56 yards out with 10 seconds on the clock. Overtime was necessary, and momentum instantly flipped when Marcus Mariota was intercepted by Jack Jones on the first play from scrimmage.

After De'Von Achane helped get the Dolphins in a comfortable spot for a field goal, Riley Patterson won it from 29 yards out.

Both offenses left something on the table Sunday, but Achane was the most explosive weapon on the field with 165 total yards. Achane has 390 yards over his last two games, asserting himself as the focal point of a Dolphins team that can put itself right in the AFC playoff conversation if it handles business against the New Orleans Saints and New York Jets after a bye.

Dolphins 16, Commanders 13

12:42 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Patterson knocks a 29-yard field goal through, and the Dolphins will leave Madrid with the win!

12:40 p.m. — A couple of Achane runs have the Dolphins in safer field goal range now.

12:38 p.m. INTERCEPTION — Mariota is intercepted by Jack Jones! What a swing. The Dolphins are set up in field goal range to win the game. 

12:36 p.m. — The Commanders will start with the ball. As a reminder, both teams get a chance to possess the ball in overtime.

End of regulation: Commanders 13, Dolphins 13

12:31 p.m. — Waddle bobbles and drops a pass that could have set up a very long field goal, and a last-ditch lateral attempt fails. We are headed to overtime.

12:30 p.m. — Matt Gay's 56-yard attempt curves to the right and MISSES. We are still tied at 13 with 10 seconds remaining. Overtime looms if the Dolphins can't complete a quick pass to the sidelines here.

12:29 p.m. — Chris Moore sees a downfield shot from Mariota go off his hand. It's fourth down. Moore had a shot at that one. 

12:27 p.m. — Jacoby Jones' first NFL catch is a big gain into Commanders territory. Washington is approaching field goal range, though Gay missed from 51 yards earlier.

12:25 p.m. — Mariota hits Samuel for 28 yards, giving the Commanders the jumpstart they needed. Still a long way to go to get into field goal range given where they started.

12:24 p.m. — Not even close! The Commanders easily stop the Dolphins on 4th & Goal, and Miami is going to have a hard time living tat sequence down. 

12:23 p.m. — Achane walks it off, but the Dolphins are going for it without him.

12:21 p.m. — Javon Kinlaw gets in there and keeps Achane out of the end zone on third down. Achane appears to be injured.

12:18 p.m. — Achane is a yard, if not inches, short of a touchdown on second down. We're headed to the two-minute warning.

12:16 p.m. — Achane breaks free and picks up 18 yards for the Dolphins, setting up 1st & Goal with 2:29 remaining. He's up to 115 scrimmage yards on the day, 92 on the ground.

12:10 p.m. FUMBLE — Oh no! Mike Sainristil muffs the punt, and the Dolphins recover. It went through Sainristil's arms. The Dolphins will start in Commanders territory.

12:09 p.m. — Tagovailoa escapes a sack but still gets taken down. The Dolphins are also called for a holding penalty, so the result would have been bad regardless. Miami will have to punt it away with barely more than four minutes remaining.

12:08 p.m. — Waddle with a bad drop on second down, setting up 3rd & 13 for the Dolphins.

12:07 p.m. — Ollie Gordon II goes for 20 yards and gives the Dolphins some much-needed breathing room.

12:03 p.m. — Zach Ertz slips, and Mariota's fourth down pass is incomplete. The Dolphins come up with a massive stop and keep this game tied at 13 with a chance to go down the field and take the lead.

12:00 p.m. — Rodriguez gets stuffed on third down, setting up a crucial 4th & Goal with the Commanders set to go for it.

11:58 a.m. — McNichols is about one yard shy of the end zone on second down, so the Commanders have two plays to punch it in. 

11:55 a.m. — There goes Mariota! He's back in the game and takes off for 43 yards to instantly put the Commanders in the red zone. What a run.

Dolphins 13, Commanders 13

11:47 a.m. TOUCHDOWN — Ollie Gordon II is IN for the touchdown. The Dolphins finally come away from a red zone trip with a touchdown and have tied this game at 13.

11:46 a.m. — A well-designed pass play takes Achane down to the one-yard line, but he can't get in. It's 3rd & Goal.

11:43 a.m. — Malik Washington's emergence continues as he makes another play to put the Dolphins on the edge of the red zone. Miami has had its struggles here today. Can Tagovailoa and co. Finally cash in?

11:33 a.m. — Journeyman Josh Johnson comes into the game for a third down snap with Mariota apparently injured. Mariota is on the sideline with his helmet off. The Commanders are going to be forced to punt here.

11:28 a.m. — A big, big third down conversion for the Commanders as Jeremy McNichols gives Washington some breathing room. The Dolphins' defense nearly forced the Commanders to punt out of their own end zone.

11:22 a.m. — The Dolphins go for it, and Bobby Wagner breaks up Tagovailoa's pass to Waddle. Miami comes away with nothing after tearing through the Commanders' defense early in the drive.

11:21 a.m. — Once again, the Commanders' defense has forced a fourth down in the red zone.

11:18 a.m. — Miami's offense is suddenly making it look easy again and has barreled into the red zone. Can the Dolphins finish this time?

11:14 a.m. — The Dolphins finally get some life from Jaylen Waddle, who sparks this drive with a 31-yard reception.

Commanders 13, Dolphins 6

11:11 a.m. TOUCHDOWN — Deebo Samuel barrels into the end zone and gives the Commanders their first lead of the game! Washington leads, 13-6.

11:08 a.m. — Rodriguez bursts forward and has the Commanders looking for points right out of the gate in the second half.

End of first half: Dolphins 6, Commanders 6

10:45 a.m. FIELD GOAL — Gay's short field goal is perfect, and this game will go to halftime even at six.

10:49 a.m. — Samuel gets a bunch of yardage back, but the Commanders will still have to settle for a game-tying field goal.

10:48 a.m. — An offensive pass interference call on Deebo Samuel sets the Commanders back with 12 seconds remaining. 

10:45 a.m. — Rodriguez picks up a first down and a little bit more on third down, which should prevent the Dolphins from getting the ball back before halftime.

10:41 a.m. — The Commanders will come out of the two-minute warning needing 32 yards for a touchdown. They're hoping to at least be in position to even this game before halftime, though Matt Gay missed from 51 yards out earlier in the half.

10:37 a.m. — A rocky start to this Washington drive is buried by a nice catch by Chris Moore for a first down, taking the Commanders to midfield. They have plenty of time with about three minutes on the clock.

10:31 a.m. — The Commanders quickly get the Dolphins off the field, sacking Tagovailoa on third down. A touchdown still eludes these two teams.

10:26 a.m. — A Tyrel Dodson sack of Mariota sets the Commanders back, and Matt Gay misses a 51-yard field goal try. Both of these offenses are making a habit of hot starts and brutal finishes to each drive.

10:21 a.m. — The Commanders are off and running into Dolphins territory after a 15-yard Zach Ertz catch and a 17-yard gain by Chris Rodriguez Jr. 

Dolphins 6, Commanders 3

10:16 a.m. FIELD GOAL — The Dolphins add another field goal, but they have to be questioning why their dominant drives are fizzling out as they approach the end zone.

10:15 a.m. — Tagovailoa is taken down by Jacob Martin for a major loss on third down. The Dolphins miss another opportunity to get into the end zone and will have to attempt another field goal.

10:12 a.m. — The Dolphins' running game is slicing through a hurting Commanders defense, and now Tua Tagovailoa hits Malik Washington for 18 yards to enter the red zone.

Dolphins 3, Commanders 3

10:00 a.m. FIELD GOAL — The Commanders can't cash it in, but they match the Dolphins' field goal. It's 3-3. 

9:54 a.m. — The Commanders are into the red zone after a Dolphins penalty, and a subsequent pass interference penalty gives Washington another fresh set of downs at the 11.

9:51 a.m. — Jaylin Lane gets hit hard after a catch, but he has a first down and more for Washington.

9:49 a.m. — The Commanders go for it on fourth down and draw up a nice play, with Marcus Mariota hitting Colson Yankoff to keep the drive alive.

Dolphins 3, Commanders 0

9:43 a.m. FIELD GOAL — Riley Patterson drills a 46-yard attempt, and the Dolphins are on the board first.

9:41 a.m. — It's 4th & 1 in field goal range, but you already know the Dolphins are going for it...and they can't get the snap off in time. A delay of game penalty is going to force a Miami field goal try after such a hot start. 

9:38 a.m. — Miami has gone for 11, 14 and 23 yards on its first three plays. That'll work.

9:36 a.m. — The Dolphins receive the ball first, and they are already rolling: two plays, two first downs.

9:15 a.m. — As expected, Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin remain out for the Commanders. Washington is also missing DT Daron Payne today due to a suspension.

9:05 a.m. — Bradley Chubb is active for the Dolphins despite a foot injury.
