Trey Lance and Justin Fields are going to get a gut check in the first game of the season, as two quarterbacks out of the 2021 draft class face off against each other when the 49ers and Bears open the year.

For Lance, it's his first season as an opening day starter with Jimmy Garoppolo (somehow) still on the roster but, for all intents and purposes, shelved. Fields, meanwhile, will try to serve as a beacon for a team still in the throes of a rebuild, as the Bears figure out their identity under new coach Matt Eberflus.

The 49ers have some work to do if they're going to catch the Rams (and possibly the Cardinals) in the NFC West, but they're hoping Lance is able to take them over the hump. The Bears, meanwhile, just want to close the gap between themselves and the Packers in the NFC North.

While that seems like an uphill battle, the Bears are hoping their window is a bit more open than the NFL world anticipates. It's Week 1, so optimism can abound.
