New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields has never lacked confidence. That's not a bad thing, either. The former Ohio State star and Chicago Bears first-round pick will need every bit of that high opinion of himself to succeed in the Big Apple in 2025, especially if he wants to make good on the two-year, $40 million contract he inked with the team in free agency.

Fields and the rest of the Jets' veterans took to the practice field this week during the team's OTA sessions, and he flashed his trademark athleticism and rushing ability, albeit in a limited t-shirt and shorts setting.

Still, the visions of Fields prancing past defenders impressed media members on Thursday, and Fields doubled down on his expectations for 2025.

“I think I can be great,” Fields said. “That’s been the goal for me my whole life, my whole career. Like I said, I think the sky’s the limit for this team, this offense. We do have a long way to go.

"We have all the guys we need. We have all the talent. It’s really going to come down to discipline and execution when the games come.”

There's a sense that Fields can finally live up to the hype that made him a first-round pick in 2021, especially if a team like the Jets commits to an offense that prioritizes his strengths. Sure, it's pretty football when teams can throw the ball 40 times a game and showcase a 4,500-yard passer, but if Fields maxes out as a 3,000-yard passer and 1,000-yard rusher? The New York Jets' offense will be cooking with gas.

As for that whole confidence thing? Fields will need really thick skin in the build-up to Week 1, when he takes on his former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, who opted against re-signing him. Now, they're waiting on former Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers to emerge from the darkness and confirm he wants to play football in 2025.

Fields said Thursday that he was unmoved by playing against the team that snubbed him.

"There really wasn’t a thought to that," he said.
