TL;DR
- Minnesota Vikings' season is disappointing, with J.J. McCarthy not meeting expectations in his debut year.
- Justin Jefferson expressed a desire to return to enjoying football and making big plays.
- Jefferson clarified he is not mad at the Vikings but wants to win as a competitor.
- The New York Jets could be a potential landing spot for Justin Jefferson if he asks out.
This season hasn't been ideal for the Minnesota Vikings, particularly following last year's performance as one of the NFL's top teams. The Vikings' choice to part ways with Sam Darnold has proven incorrect so far, with second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy not yet meeting their expectations.
McCarthy has a lot to learn in the NFL, especially since this marks his debut season as the starting quarterback, having missed his rookie year with a knee injury.
Still, it could also frustrate some players on the roster, including Justin Jefferson.
Last week, Jefferson shared a post on Instagram where he made the catch of the year in 2023.
When questioned about his post, Jefferson stated his desire to return to enjoying football on Sundays and executing significant plays.
“Just wanted to get back to that kid phase of overly loving football, overly loving being out there on Sundays, making the big plays. Just being part of this great organization. Just wanting to get back mentally into that mode,” Jefferson told reporters.
Following Jefferson's apparent lack of effort on a play and his visible frustration when McCarthy's pass was intercepted against the Ravens, these questions arose.
Why the Jets make sense
He also cleared the air with that, simply stating that he just wants to win and he's a competitor.
“I’m not really mad at the situation that I’m in, or I’m not mad at the players that we have or the plays that’s being called. Of course I’m mad after an interception, you want me to be happy and go chase him down?” Jefferson questioned.
“I want to win, I’m an ultra competitor. A lot of people that don’t play this game, don’t play sports don’t understand the competitive side of it.”
Given the Vikings haven’t been competitive, it’s only fair to wonder if he might eventually ask out. If it happens and the New York Jets believe they can find their quarterback in the offseason, whoever it might be, New York would make a lot of sense for a star like Jefferson.
