Jets' Justin Fields ruled out for Week 14, Missouri rookie named backup QB image

The New York Jets face the Miami Dolphins in Week 14 in a matchup between two AFC East teams amid disappointing seasons.

But, with the Dolphins on a three-game winning streak, and the Jets coming off a walk-off field goal win, it's a much more interesting matchup than it appears on paper.

But, as Rich Cimini of ESPN reports, the Jets will be without Justin Fields, leaving rookie undrafted free agent and former Missouri quarterback Brady Cook to be the new backup quarterback to Tyrod Taylor.

Jets rule out Justin Fields, name rookie Brady Cook backup

"Backup QB Justin Fields, who reported knee soreness on Wednesday, has been ruled OUT for Sunday, per Aaron Glenn," Cimini reports. "Rookie Brady Cook will be the QB2. #Jets."

Fields has been the starter for all but four games this season for the Jets, as Taylor has been named the starter for the rest of the regular season to give the team's front office a good look at the young receiving talent on the roster.

He's not played for the Jets since his benching, and now, dealing with a knee injury, he won't even be active, as Fields is ruled out for the Week 14 contest against the Miami Dolphins.

In his place is undrafted rookie free agent Brady Cook. The former Missouri quarterback played for the Tigers from 2020 until 2024. Last season, he had a 63.6 completion percentage with 2,535 passing yards and 11 touchdowns with two interceptions,

Cook did get some preseason action for the Jets, completing 25 of 38 passes for 235 yards and one touchdown with one interception in three preseason games against the Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, and Philadelphia Eagles.

It's still Taylor's job in Week 14, but if he were to go down with an injury, then the Jets would have to turn to Cook for his NFL debut against a Dolphins defense that has been much improved in recent weeks.
