Former Jets QB Zach Wilson dealt devastating career blow after Dolphins decision image

The career of former New York Jets and current Miami Dolphins quarterback Zach Wilson was already in rough shape, but it was dealt a devastating blow on Tuesday.

Wilson, who has been serving as the backup for the Dolphins all season long, will be been passed over for Quinn Ewers, who is reportedly taking the reins under center with the Dolphins benching Tua Tagovailoa.

"A major move in Miami: the Dolphins are benching QB Tua Tagovailoa and turning to Quinn Ewers as their new starting QB, per sources," ESPN's Adam Schefter reported.

The fact that the Dolphins are going with Ewers over Wilson shows the team does not view the former first-round pick as worthy of getting a look to close out the season, which is the latest indictment on his career.

We've seen other former Jets quarterbacks rebound in new homes over the years, with both Geno Smith and Sam Darnold coming to mind.

Playing out the last three games of this season would have been a good opportunity for Wilson to do the same, but clearly he's not going to get that chance, which tells us everything we need to know about how little Wilson has progressed since departing from New York.

A former No. 2 overall pick of the Jets, Wilson failed miserably in New York over his three seasons with the team before he was traded to the Denver Broncos in 2024.

After seeing zero action in Denver, Wilson left in free agency, joining the Dolphins to serve as Tagovailoa's backup. Wilson got into three games this season but didn't make any starts and threw just nine passes in total.

Wilson is slated to be a free agent in 2026, and after the Dolphins showed zero faith in him with the Tua benching, there's a good chance he'll be looking for a new home.
