The New York Jets are locked in a tight AFC East battle with the Miami Dolphins as Aaron Glenn is still searching for his first win as an NFL head coach.
Coming up against the also winless Dolphins, the Jets need all of their stars firing to be a chance, but at Hard Rock Stadium, the football gods dealt them a blow in the second quarter.
Running back Braelon Allen, who had rushed for 26 yards on four carries, was given return duties, and on his 24-yard return, suffered a knee injury as a Miami special teams player fell on the side of his knee, pushing it inwards.
Then just minutes later, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport posted on X that Allen had already been ruled out.
Exactly what the injury is, we aren't sure, but given how his knee bent, it doesn't look good. We won't speculate what it could be as the Jets will no doubt go through all the diagnostics and tests over the coming days to determine what happened.
Either way, Allen was lost for the rest of the game.
Jets dealt blow with Allen injury
Given that Tanner Engstrand's offense was already run-heavy, now it will be up to Breece Hall and Isaiah Davis to shoulder the load, along with Justin Fields, to make plays in the run game.
The run splits were nearly even with Hall (five) and Allen (four) working well in tandem at the time of Braelon's injury, but now that he is out for the game, and possibly longer, the Jets will have to adjust on the fly against Miami.
Given his potential, it is a cruel blow, and the Jets will be hoping that Allen isn't out too long because it is clear he has a big future ahead of him.
But right now, his career has been paused as we await the outcome of his injury.
