On Sunday, the New York Jets will begin a new era under head coach Aaron Glenn, who has placed his trust in quarterback Justin Fields to lead the team. Since entering the NFL, Fields has faced criticism for his performances. However, both Fields and Glenn believe this season will reshape that narrative.
Amid the scrutiny, one aspect of Fields' game has consistently earned praise: his rushing ability. ESPN analyst Rich Cimini highlighted this strength and issued a strong prediction about Fields' potential impact in that area.
According to Cimini, Fields has the potential to be the "best running quarterback in Jets history."
Cimini said,
"Barring injury, Fields probably will go down as the best running quarterback in Jets history. He averages 50 rushing yards per game. At that pace, he'd break the single-season record (453 yards, Al Dorow, 1960) in 10 games and he'd shatter the career mark (821, Richard Todd) in his 17th game."
Fields never fully showcased his abilities during his time with the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers. The opener against the Steelers is his best chance to show his full potential. Fields enters the game with an advantage, having previously played under Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.
Tomlin, well aware of Fields' capabilities, is preparing his defense accordingly. Earlier this week, he emphasized the importance of containing Fields and the Jets' run game.
"You've got to start first with their running game," Tomlin told reporters on Tuesday. "I think Coach (Aaron) Glenn has been very transparent about their desire to run the football and their commitment to do so, and so that has our attention as we prepare."
With the Jets, Fields has the stage for a breakout season. A former Jets official described Fields as possibly the "best, most athletic quarterback in the club's history." Now, the time has come for Fields to prove that claim on the field.
