Wide receiver Adonai Mitchell has New York Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand all fired up.
Mitchell made his Jets debut in Week 11 after coming over in the trade deadline deal that sent Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts.
Unfortunately, things didn't go great in terms of his production. Mitchell had just one catch on six targets and recorded three drops, one of which prevented a big completion down the sideline from quarterback Justin Fields.
But there was one positive: Mitchell achieved a 33% separation win rate versus man coverage, which amounts to the third-best mark by a Jets wideout all season.
Mitchell's ability to separate has Engstrand excited for the future with his newest wide receiver.
“What I see there, is separation. I see separation — and, to me, that gets me fired up. That gets me excited about that player and where he’s gonna go," Engstrand admitted.
"We haven’t even seen it, we haven’t seen it or scratched the surface with that guy, and we are excited about where he’s gonna go.”
A second-round pick of the Colts in 2024, Mitchell had a tough time getting chances in Indy's passing attack thanks to a crowded wide receiver room.
That wasn't his only issue, but it was at least one of the biggest.
But Mitchell has a golden opportunity to turn his career around in New York, as the team has one of the worst wide receiver rooms in the NFL, which gives him a clear path to plenty of targets, especially while Garrett Wilson is on the shelf.
Looking ahead to Week 12 and beyond, Mitchell has a better quarterback situation now that Fields has been benched for Tyrod Taylor, which will only help his cause.
