It has been almost two full days since news broke on Wednesday night that the New York Giants were expected to hire John Harbaugh as their next head coach.
However, since news of the expected hiring broke, we haven't heard a peep out of the Giants and the deal remains unfinalized.
So, is there a reason to worry that there might be a last-second change?
As of right now, there doesn't appear to be.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported that Harbaugh has been "very methodical about doing due diligence" when it comes to his next job, so it's not surprising the Giants haven't wrapped this up yet.
Both Pelissero and SNY's Connor Hughes reported a resolution could come as soon as Friday but the deal remains unfinalized as of this writing. Hughes adds that he does not expect the deal to fall through.
"Talks continue between the Giants and John Harbaugh, and a deal could get done in the coming hours. But Harbaugh has been very methodical about doing due diligence, and nothing is finalized yet," Pelissero reported.
"The Giants and John Harbaugh are expected to finalize the deal for him to become their head coach today, per sources," Hughes said. "They’re pretty close to getting it done, I’m told. I do not expect anything to change that."
Why Giants, Harbaugh haven't finalized contract
We would point to Pelissero's report and guess the two sides are just ironing out some last-minute details in Harbaugh's contract before making it official.
And as Hughes points out, there doesn't appear to be anything that will stop Harbaugh from becoming the next Giants head coach.
By all accounts, both sides want this badly, and Harbaugh so much so that he had the Giants as his top preferred landing spot, even before getting fired by the Baltimore Ravens, according to The Athletic's Ian O'Connor.
At this point, it's a matter of when, not if, Harbaugh will be announced as the next head coach of the Giants.
