New York Giants make Joe Schoen announcement after firing Brian Daboll image

The New York Giants have made a decision on general manager Joe Schoen in the wake of the team firing head coach Brian Daboll.

New York decided to cut its now-former head coach loose on Monday and has since released a statement confirming the move.

But, in that statement, the team also revealed that Schoen will indeed remain in his job and will be lead the search for Daboll's replacement.

"Joe Schoen remains in his position as general manager and will lead the search for a new head coach," the team announced.

This is the third time the Giants will fire a head coach while keeping the general manager in the last 10 years.

The team did the same in 2015 by keeping Jerry Reese and firing Tom Coughlin, and then again in 2019 by keeping Dave Gettleman while cutting Pat Shurmur loose. We know how those two situations ended.

On the surface, this is incredibly shocking after the terrible job Schoen and Daboll have done over the past three-plus seasons.

However, internally, there is a very different view of Schoen.

According to SNY's Connor Hughes, the Giants view Schoen "in high regard" and the team's brass believes the results don't match the talent on the roster, which puts the blame on Daboll's shoulders.

"The feeling internally, I’m told, is that the Giants believe the talent is better than the results have shown — evident by four loses despite holding 10-point leads," he reported. "That, plus the Jaxson Dart injury, called forth the change. Agree or disagree, that’s how they currently view the situation."

While Daboll does deserve plenty of blame, so does Schoen, who has done a lousy job building the roster in recent years.

Even the prize of Schoen's time with the Giants, quarterback Jaxson Dart, was more of a Daboll pick than a Schoen pick, as Hughes laid out.

"It was Daboll who fell in love with the Ole Miss QB and slammed every table until New York drafted him," Hughes said. "Dart was Daboll’s guy, as SNY reported before the draft."

The Giants can hold Schoen in high regard all they want, but the fact of the matter is the results do not warrant them doing so.

We would suspect this decision won't sit well with Giants fans, who wanted the team to fully clean house. It looks like they won't get their wish.
