The New York Giants are a prime candidate to unload some players ahead of the 2025 NFL trade deadline.
The Giants appear to be on a crash course for another bad season after an 0-2 start and the jobs of head coach Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen are likely riding on what rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart shows whenever he's inserted into the lineup.
When that moves comes, ESPN's Dan Graziano believes it could lead to the Giants trading current starter, Russell Wilson, at the trade deadline. Graziano also thinks edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux could be dealt.
Even if quarterback Russell Wilson is playing well by midseason, there's a possibility the Giants will decide to switch to first-round pick Jaxson Dart -- either because they think he's ready to take over or because they're losing too much and feel they need to change something to produce a spark. When and if that happens, Wilson could be appealing to a front office looking to acquire a veteran QB for the stretch run. Jameis Winston is also in the Giants' quarterback room, though he might be in their 2026 plans as a veteran backup to Dart.
New York picked up the fifth-year option on edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, so he's signed through 2026. But given the Giants' depth in the defensive front seven, they could certainly get calls on someone such as Thibodeaux if they're falling out of contention. He has 1.5 sacks to begin the season.
We could definitely see Wilson getting traded.
After all, he's on a one-year deal and would become expendable when the Giants turn to Dart, which could happen sooner rather than later. It would make sense to get something for him before Wilson leaves in 2026 and there will probably be teams interested in his services as a backup.
It's not as cut and dry with Thibodeaux, though.
While a lot is riding on the arm of Dart when it comes to Daboll's and Schoen's futures with the Giants, the team also has to be competitive down the stretch.
Trading away a key defender like Thibodeaux wouldn't help that cause, which is why the embattled Giants duo might be hesitant to do so.
