The New York Giants are officially interviewing John Harbaugh for their head coach job, and the team has a significant advantage over the rest of his suitors.
According to several reports, the Giants are bringing Harbaugh in for an interview on Wednesday, which marks the first in-person interview he has had. Harbaugh did interview with the Atlanta Falcons, but that was a virtual meeting.
Not only does having the first in-person interview with Harbaugh give the Giants an advantage, but New York has also satisfied The Rooney Rule, and according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, they are the only head coach-needy team to do so.
"Through today, the Giants are the only team that can hire a coach. Today is the first 'interview' but there have been countless conversations between Harbaugh and Giants brass. There is a chance he does not leave the building," he reported.
By all accounts, there is significant mutual interest between Harbaugh and the Giants.
SNY's Connor Hughes reports that Harbaugh is indeed New York's No. 1 candidate, and The Athletic's Ian O'Connor and Dianna Russini report the Giants are one of the former Baltimore Ravens head coach's top-three preferred destinations.
It's easy to see why both sides are interested.
The Giants desperately need stability and there is no better option than a head coach who just spent 18 years with one franchise, winning one Super Bowl.
New York is attractive for Harbaugh because the team already has a promising young quarterback in place in Jaxson Dart, and some intriguing pieces on both sides of the ball overall.
It remains to be seen when Harbaugh will make his ultimate decision, but we would not rule out the Giants and Harbaugh getting something done before he leaves the building on Wednesday.
