Giants rumors point to rocky start for John Harbaugh, Joe Schoen relationship image

The New York Giants have reportedly hired John Harbaugh as their next head coach, but the process didn't come without some drama.

The news of the Giants finally hiring Harbaugh comes days after it was initially reported he was expected to become the next head coach.

We now have more details on what the hold up was.

According to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, there was a "power struggle" during negotiations between Harbaugh and the Giants that he says "creates a bad taste" going into the Harbaugh era in New York.

"But the confirmed power struggle, as a source called it, during negotiations of Harbaugh’s contract creates a bad taste entering what was supposed to be a new era for the fallen franchise," Leonard reported.

Harbaugh was seeking to report directly to owner John Mara and wanted final say over personnel decisions instead of general manager Joe Schoen, which is a departure from how the Giants typically do things.

But Harbaugh got what he wanted, which pretty much eradicates any power that Schoen had, something he can't be too thrilled about.

"Harbaugh as the Giants’ coach, will not answer to Schoen," Leonard reported. "He will have the tiebreaking personnel vote. And ultimately, Schoen will not have any real say at all."

Also notable from Leonard's report is the constant leaks coming from the Giants in the process of hiring Harbaugh were believed to be coming from Schoen, which Leonard says didn't sit well with the new Giants head coach.

"And people close to the situation even said that leaks, believed to be from Schoen, prematurely celebrating Harbaugh’s hiring, did not go over well with the old school coach, who believes in one message coming from one building," Leonard wrote.

All of this creates quite the awkward situation between Harbaugh and Schoen, which is not an ideal start to this relationship and sets up a situation where the Giants could potentially ditch their general manager at the first sign of trouble.
