The New York Giants have a new favorite for their head coaching vacancy, two NFL insiders reported.
That new favorite, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, is former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, who was fired on Tuesday.
Schefter adds that Harbaugh is drawing interest from other teams, as well. In fact, Harbaugh's agent told the NFL insider that he received calls from all seven teams with a head-coaching vacancy.
"Sources: John Harbaugh is expected to emerge as a favorite for the head coaching job of the New York Giants," Schefter reported." Harbaugh will be in demand for many teams, not just the Giants."
The Athletic's Ian O'Connor anoints Harbaugh as the favorite for the Giants gig as well, but he adds that Harbaugh has a "high regard" for the job and Jaxson Dart, and he "might have the Giants at No. 1" on his list of preferred destinations.
O'Connor had previously noted that former Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski was the favorite before Harbaugh became available.
"John Harbaugh has a high regard for the Giants job and for Jaxson Dart," he wrote. "Of the six HC openings, I believe he might have the Giants at No. 1, or damn close to it. As I wrote yesterday, I believe he hurdles Kevin Stefanski as the leader in the clubhouse."
It makes total sense for the Giants to have a ton of interest in Harbaugh.
After all, the Giants need stability, and nothing says stability like a head coach who stayed with the same team for 18 seasons.
A history of winning is also obviously important since the Giants haven't done much of that in recent years.
Over his 18 seasons in Baltimore, Harbaugh compiled a 293-180 record and had a.500 or better record 15 times. And, oh yeah, he won a Super Bowl in 2012.
Whether it's Harbaugh or Stefanski, it would appear the Giants have a good chance to land one of the two most coveted candidates on the market this cycle.
