ESPN report indicates Brain Daboll created tense workplace with Giants assistant coaches image

The New York Giants made the decision to fire head coach Brian Daboll after their Week 10 loss to the Chicago Bears. The loss marked another blown fourth-quarter lead for the Giants, and that sealed Daboll's fate. Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka has been named the interim head coach.

In the wake of Daboll's firing, ESPN's Jordan Raanan reports that there was a level of tension between Daboll and Kafka, which stemmed back to 2023.

"One player recently told ESPN of Daboll exploding and threatening to take away playcalling from assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Mike Kafka after tight end Theo Johnson dropped a crucial third-down pass downfield against the Eagles," Raanan writes. "Meanwhile, Daboll had already taken playcalling from Kafka at times during the 2023 season and then full time for 2024. That didn't go well to the point that Mara made a point of recommending he give it back to Kafka this season."

This is far from the first time that Daboll and one of his assistants had tension. Former Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale left the Giants after it was reported that his relationship with Daboll had grown tense, the final straw being Daboll firing multiple assistants to Martindale.

This, combined with another 2-8 start, were too much for the Giants and they made the change. Now, Kafka gets a chance to show what he can do as the interim head coach.
