Saints rookie QB Tyler Shough's age about to come in handy as starter after Derek Carr announcement image

Welcome to the NFL, Tyler Shough.

Rather than have 11-year NFL veteran Derek Carr as a mentor, it may just be the oddly old rookie who gets to start in New Orleans.

The Saints won't rush Shough. They have Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener, two other young QBs who have already started games in the NFL.

But when Shough is ready, the Saints will count on him to take them into a new era.

How old is Tyler Shough?

As of Carr's retirement, Shough is 25 years old. He'll turn 26 on September 28.

Shough spent seven seasons in college football.

He began his career at Oregon so long ago, he got to back up the now-established NFL veteran Justin Herbert.

Some knocked Shough for his age during the draft process, but he's got quite the experience level.

He did battle multiple collegiate injuries, so it wasn't a straight line toward professional football. And he didn't start as many games as someone like Browns third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel.

But if you could experience something in college football, Shough experienced it.

He's actually exactly a year older than Rattler, his second-year teammate.

The Saints will be hoping that Shough's wisdom comes through in a hurry. It's gonna have to.
