The New Orleans Saints are struggling out of the gate, which many expected given their uncertain quarterback situation. In fact, it may be one of the weakest QB rooms in the NFL, with no clear option ready to take the next step.

“There’s no question that the New Orleans Saints have one of the ugliest quarterback situations in the NFL right now. The good news for New Orleans is that they’ve got younger guys with some upside, although they did use a second-round pick on one of the oldest QB prospects to come along in quite some time (Tyler Shough, will be 26 this season),” NFL Spin Zone’s Sayre Bedinger wrote.

This dilemma follows the offseason retirement of veteran Derek Carr.

“Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I've decided to retire from the National Football League," said Carr. "For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. It's difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special."

With the current QB struggles, the Saints may turn to the draft—and one intriguing option is already in their backyard.

“Saints offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier has a little familiarity with Garrett's game being his father and all. Nussmeier is a Day 1 starter who operates at a high level from the pocket. He's had a bit of a slow start, but has also faced a difficult slate out of the gates,” CBS Sports’s Mike Renner wrote.

Garrett Nussmeier is expected to be a high-profile name in this upcoming draft class—and having his father on staff could give the Saints a unique advantage if they pursue him.

The LSU quarterback is already well-adjusted to life in Louisiana, making him a natural fit for the Saints both on and off the field.
