The Minnesota Vikings haven't had the season anyone in that organization wanted them to have.

They have a massively expensive roster and so much talent.

Yet here they are, two weeks to play, long-since out of the playoff race.

Despite that, the Vikings are playing on Christmas Day against the Detroit Lions.

Their troubles will be summed up at the quarterback position, where Max Brosmer gets the start on Christmas, not J.J. McCarthy.

Why is Max Brosmer playing QB for Vikings, not J.J. McCarthy?

Brosmer is playing because everyone else is injured.

The original backup QB in Minnesota, Carson Wentz, is out for the season with a shoulder injury.

McCarthy, in a season full of injuries, was hurt again in Week 16, sustaining a right-hand ailment that is keeping him out.

That gives Brosmer his second start.

Brosmer is an undrafted free agent rookie out of the University of Minnesota. He started earlier this season in Seattle against the Seahawks, and it was brutal.

The Vikings will hope to at least see improvement out of Brosmer this time around.
