Minnesota Vikings cut ties with popular defender in surprising move image

The Minnesota Vikings have made a surprising roster move on Thursday.

The team announced it has waived 2024 undrafted free-agent signing and cornerback Dwight McGlothern Jr., who had become a fan-favorite over his two years with the team.

The expectation, according to The Athletic's Alec Lewis, is the move is being done to clear room for the return of center Ryan Kelly, who is returning from an injured reserve stint due to a concussion.

With McGlothern off the 53-man roster, the Vikings are now dangerously thin at cornerback, with Fabian Moreau, Byron Murphy Jr. And Isaiah Rodgers as the only players at the position still on the 53-man roster.

Minnesota also has Shemar Bartholomew, Tyrek Funderburk and Zemaiah Vaughn on the practice squad. We would suspect McGlothern will join them if he passes through waivers.

McGlothern was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2024 and appeared in five games that season.

The Arkansas product has played in eight games this season as a reserve, seeing 31 snaps on defense and 16 on special teams.
