J.J. McCarthy injury update: Vikings QB delivered crushing news image

It's been a frustrating season filled with injuries for Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy, and he was delivered more crushing injury news on Tuesday.

After exiting Minnesota's Week 16 contest versus the New York Giants with a hand injury, McCarthy underwent further tests. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the MRI and tests revealed that McCarthy has a hairline fracture in his throwing hand and will miss the Vikings' Week 17 game.

"Vikings QB JJ McCarthy, who underwent an MRI and other tests on his right, throwing hand, has suffered a hairline fracture and he’s out this week. Another frustrating injury," Rapoport wrote on X.

Injuries have been a constant theme for McCarthy through two seasons. After missing his entire rookie campaign in 2024 due to a torn meniscus, the Michigan product has been held out of six games this year with a concussion and ankle sprain.

McCarthy is now set to miss his seventh game of 2025 with the hairline fracture. In 9 games this season, the 22-year-old has tossed 11 touchdowns to 12 interceptions with a 57.3% completion rate and a 5-4 record.

2025 has been a rough year for McCarthy. The 2024 No.10 overall pick will look to bounce back in 2026 and prove he can be Minnesota's franchise quarterback, if he's even given the opportunity.
