The Miami Dolphins, after their Week 9 loss and the subsequent departure of general manager Chris Grier, were viewed as clear sellers at the 2025 NFL deadline.
While a Jaylen Waddle trade might not be off the table, it's still unlikely. The same can't be said for Jaelan Phillips, who, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, is being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles.
It's the first move in what could be a very busy trade deadline for Miami. The Dolphins were asking for a third-round pick in exchange for Phillips, but what did the Dolphins actually get in return?
What did the Dolphins get in return for Jaelan Phillips?
According to Rapoport, the Dolphins are getting a 2026 third-round pick from the Eagles. The previous reports that Miami was looking for a third-round pick wound up being the draft compensation. Miami got what they were looking for.

However, there is a huge important detail when it comes to this trade with the Eagles specifically. Philadelphia owns two third-round picks. Their own, which is projected near the end of the third round, and the third rounder of the New York Jets.
While Philadelphia's third-round pick could potentially be in the 90s, the Jets' third-round pick could be as high as pick 67 in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Unfortunately for the Dolphins, according to NFL insider Mike Garafolo, the Dolphins are getting the Eagles' draft pick, not the Jets' pick. As Garafolo mentions, "So, that'll be the lower of the two picks."

Champ Kelly's first trade since taking over as general manager for Grier is a big one, landing a day-two draft pick in exchange for a rental in Phillips. Miami gets the pick they were looking for, giving the Dolphins three third-rounders in the 2026 NFL draft.

But the updates on this trade aren't done yet. According to Rapoport, "the Dolphins are paying a portion of Jaelan Phillips' salary to facilitate the trade, source said, taking on money for a better pick."

Phillips is in the final year of his rookie deal and is making $13.25 million this season. In the trade with the Eagles, the Dolphins are taking on some money to ensure they get their desired third-round pick compensation. It makes sense from the Dolphins' perspective, as the short-term money savings do little to help the team compared to a better draft pick.
All in all, the Dolphins' first trade of the 2025 NFL deadline went about as expected. Phillips was viewed as the most likely pass rusher to be traded in Miami, and not only was he dealt, but he also landed the Dolphins the desired third-round draft pick compensation.
For Phillips, he leaves a 2-7 Dolphins team to reunite with Vic Fangio in Philadelphia on the 6-2, first-place Eagles. This trade helps everyone involved, while also starting off the Dolphins' sell-off at the deadline on the right foot.
