A leadership overhaul forced Jon-Eric Sullivan to travel south for a fresh start in Miami following the team's disappointing 7-10 season. The former Packers executive was forced to step in just 24 hours after head coach Mike McDaniel was relieved of his duties.
On Thursday, Adam Schefter shared the first official news of the week regarding the Dolphins' vacancy. The insider reported that the team finalized a deal to hire Sullivan as their new General Manager.
Owner Stephen Ross fired long-time GM Chris Grier back on Halloween and was unable to find stability for the remainder of the season.
Ross was involved in a unique process during the hiring, which led the owner to bring in Troy Aikman as an outside advisor. Aikman revealed during the interviews that he served as a "sounding board" to provide league-wide insights.
Ross alleged that the organization needed comprehensive change, leading to the selection of Sullivan over finalists Chad Alexander and Josh Williams.

Speaking in a statement after the regular season finale, Ross explained the decision.
“I informed Mike McDaniel this morning that he has been relieved of his duties as head coach,” Ross said.
“After careful evaluation and extensive discussions since the season ended, I have made the decision that our organization is in need of comprehensive change,” the owner reported.
As Sullivan acknowledged, he’s inheriting quite a negative financial reputation regarding the quarterback situation. Tua Tagovailoa carries a massive cap hit for 2026, amounting to $56.4 million.
Earlier this season, Tagovailoa was benched. This is after the quarterback’s contract was structured such that a pre-June 1 cut would result in a staggering $99.2 million dead cap hit, according to ESPN.
The McDaniel-less Dolphins will play under a new regime next season. The Dolphins will host the 11th overall pick in the upcoming draft, with the selection scheduled for late April.
