Mike McDaniel details the trust that’s fueling Miami’s unexpected duo image

Miami Dolphins tight end Greg Dulcich and rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers started the 2025 season on the Miami scout team together, and that chemistry was on display in Week 17, head coach Mike McDaniel said.

The Dolphins (7-9) edged the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-9) 20–17 on Sunday behind an efficient outing from Ewers and another productive performance Dulcich.

Ewers finished 14 of 22 for 172 yards and two touchdowns, while Dulcich hauled in five passes for 58 yards and a score. His touchdown — an 11-yard grab — helped extend Miami’s second-quarter lead.

Greg Dulcich continues to make a big play

Though it wasn’t Dulcich’s first career touchdown reception, it was his first since Christmas Day 2022, during his rookie season with Denver.

Dulcich joined the Dolphins in October after being waived by the New York Giants and quickly built a reputation for making defenses pay when they overlook him.

The game against Tampa Bay marked the fifth consecutive contest in which he recorded a reception of at least 20 yards.

Mike McDaniel says the credit goes to Ewers and Dulcich

Head coach Mike McDaniel spoke Monday about the growing connection between Ewers and Dulcich.

"Ironically, Quinn would be the authority on throwing to Greg, seeing how they started on the scout team this season," McDaniel said. "I think that's one thing.

“I think consistency and realistically (Ewers) has an idea of how Greg is going to react to certain looks based on that rapport. It's just a credit to leaning into that trust or recognizing that Quinn can trust Greg and Greg keeps coming through for him.

“Also, I think it's just two guys taking advantage of an opportunity that keeps giving us reason to give them more opportunity."

The Dolphins have been eliminated from playoff contention. Looking ahead, owner Stephen Ross has not publicly committed to McDaniel returning next season. Meanwhile, Ewers — a seventh-round pick — could have an opportunity to compete for the starting quarterback job in 2026, as Miami is widely expected to move on from Tua Tagovailoa.
