The Miami Dolphins have a running back situation to figure out before their season opener against the Indianapolis Colts.

De'Von Achane is injured, but seems like he'll play. But even if he plays, powerful rookie Ollie Gordon could be in the picture, too.

Basically: It's complicated.

The latest reports from the Sun Sentinel indicate that Achane should play but may not get his full allotment of snaps. That would leave Gordon available to take part in more early-down work and potentially get short-yardage carries.

Achane is dealing with a calf injury.

He was limited at Wednesday's practice and again at Thursday's practice, according to the Dolphins' injury report.

His Friday status will be pretty informative just to be clear on his availability for Sunday.

Last season, Achane ran for 907 yards and also caught 78 passes for 592 yards.

Gordon is a rookie out of Oklahoma State.

In college, Gordon was a superstar in 2023 but then scuffled in a mighty way in 2024.

If he can regain that old form, he could breakthrough right away as a rookie. But if his final college season was more indicative of his current talent, Gordon won't be as much of a threat to Achance.

Regardless, it seems like there could be a shared backfield, at least in Week 1, and if Achane were to aggravate anything, Gordon could see frequent work right away.
