When the Los Angeles Rams got the ball to the 1-yard line early on Sunday night, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defense should've known what's coming.
The Rams weren't going to run. They were going to throw a fade route to Davante Adams.
That's exactly what they did, and it worked, a 1-yard touchdown for Adams.
And with that, Adams had himself an NFL record.
It was the 15th 1-yard touchdown catch of Adams' career. That's more than anyone else has ever had in league history, according to Scott Kacsmar.
Adams broke a tie with the legendary tight end Jimmy Graham, who had 14 of the 1-yarders in his career.
Third place on the list is Marcedes Lewis, who is actually still active playing for the Denver Broncos. Lewis has 11 catches of TDs from the 1-yard line.
Adams has also tied the single-season record, per Kacsmar. David Sloan in 2001 and Tyler Krof in 2017 each had four 1-yard touchdown catches, and that's what Adams has at this point.
A pass catcher certainly needs his team to want to throw to him from close range to have a chance at this. Most teams will just run the football.
But it's also a skill. Adams has incredible moves at the line of scrimmage to create immediate separation, and then he's a great athlete with great hands and great footwork near the corner of the end zone.
There's no flukiness here. Adams earned this NFL record, and he may add to it before the year is over.
