Senior NFL insider Adam Schefter broke some of the craziest news in sports on Tuesday, saying that Mike Tomlin has decided to step down as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This ends his 19-season tenure with the team, which was the longest in the NFL.

With this being said, the list of head coaches with the longest time with their respective teams has changed. The Los Angeles Rams' Sean McVay is one step closer to being at the top of the list.

Sean McVay becomes the third-longest-tenured head coach after Mike Tomlin news

A new list of the NFL's longest-tenured head coaches is out, and Sean McVay is now third. He is just behind the Kansas City Chiefs' Andy Reid and the Buffalo Bills' Sean McDermott.

The margin behind McVay and McDermott is close, as the Bills' head coach was hired just one day before the Rams brought in McVay on Jan. 11, 2017.

However, there's a gap between Andy Reid and the rest of them. Reid has been the lead man in Kansas City since 2013.

Just over a week since the end of the 2025 regular season, the two coaches who had been with their franchises the longest, Mike Tomlin (19 years) of the Pittsburgh Steelers and John Harbaugh (18 years) of the Baltimore Ravens, have concluded their time with each franchise.
