Who will Chargers face in Brazil? Team predicted to get tough matchup image

The Los Angeles Chargers will open their 2025 season in Brazil. The league did the same last year, having the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers kick off the 2024 season on a Friday night in Sao Paulo.

When the NFL releases the full 2025 schedule next Wednesday, May 14th, fans will be eagerly awaiting to see who will oppose the Chargers in Brazil. John Breech of CBS Sports has put forth his prediction, as he predicted all seven of this year's international games.

"Like the first Brazil game, this matchup will be played on Friday in Week 1, so it's a prime spot on the NFL schedule. Although the NFL has been hesitant to schedule any divisional games out of the country, that could change this year. The Athletic reported in April that the Chiefs are the top team in consideration to land in this game against the Chargers. As we already mentioned, the Commanders could also be an intriguing option since they've only had to play one international game in franchise history. The Texans haven't played an international game since 2019, so they could also be under consideration.
Predicted opponent: Commanders or Chiefs", wrote Breech.

The Commanders and Texans would both be intriguing opponents as the Commanders went to the NFC Championship Game last year while the Texans knocked the Chargers out of the playoffs in the Wild Card round. But the team that sticks out the most is the Chiefs.

Would the league schedule a divisional matchup outside the country? It seems that could present an unfair disadvantage down the road, as this will count as a home game for the Chargers, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. In fact, the last time a divisional game was played outside the U.S. was in 2019, when the Chargers played those same Chiefs in Mexico.

The international series began in 2007. The Chargers are 1-2 in games played outside the country since then.

2008: Saints 37, Chargers 32
2018: Chargers 20, Titans 19
2019: Chiefs 24, Chargers 17

The first two international games played by the Chargers were both played at Wembley Stadium in London.
