Los Angeles Chargers rookie running back Omarion Hampton is nearing a return to the lineup.
Hampton has missed the Chargers' last six games due to an ankle injury, which he suffered during the team's Week 5 loss to the Washington Commanders. The North Carolina product has been on Injured Reserve since October 6, but head coach Jim Harbaugh shared a positive update on Hampton's status.
Harbaugh announced on Tuesday that Los Angeles has opened up the 21-day practice window for Hampton, meaning he could return as soon as this week.
"Chargers are opening the activation window for Omarion Hampton, per Jim Harbaugh," Daniel Popper of The Athletic said on X.
Before his injury, Hampton was on his way towards a productive rookie campaign. In five games this season, the 2025 first-round pick has posted 314 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 4.8 yards per carry.
The Chargers' running back room has been destroyed by injuries this year. Along with Hampton, Najee Harris is out for the season with a torn Achilles, and Hassan Haskins is also on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
Kimane Viddal has been Los Angeles' lead back for most of the season, tallying 417 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 4.7 yards per carry. Though Viddal has provided some jolt to the position group, he isn't capable of being the top back for an extended period of time.
Getting Hamptin back will provide a major boost to the Chargers' offense and help out quarterback Justin Herbert. It's unknown whether the dynamic running back will be ready for Los Angeles' contest versus the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, but his return is imminent.
