The Los Angeles Chargers are deep into preparation for their Week 1 matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs in Brazil, and the challenge just got tougher.
Focus on slowing Kansas City’s passing game
Reports indicate that wide receiver Rashee Rice will be available to play despite an expected suspension later in the season. That means the Chargers defense will face the Chiefs’ full offensive arsenal right out of the gate.
Rice emerged as a dangerous weapon in Kansas City’s attack, showing the ability to turn short catches into big plays. His chemistry with Patrick Mahomes makes him a priority for the Chargers' secondary. Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter will likely mix coverages to limit Rice’s yards after the catch, forcing Mahomes to look elsewhere.
Chargers' defensive game plan
The Chargers’ plan will start up front. If the pass rush can disrupt Mahomes’ timing, it will make life easier for the defensive backs. Khalil Mack will be counted on to apply consistent pressure, while Derwin James could see more snaps in the box to help against quick throws.
The secondary will also have to stay disciplined. With Rice in the lineup, Kansas City can spread the field and create mismatches. Cornerbacks will need to win one-on-one battles, and tackling in space will be a major point of emphasis in practice this week.
On offense, the Chargers hope to control the pace and keep Mahomes off the field. A strong run game and sustained drives can limit Rice’s opportunities to make plays. With a sold-out international crowd and high expectations for both teams, this opener could set the tone for the AFC West race.
The Chargers know the margin for error is small. Facing Mahomes with all his top targets healthy will test their preparation from the opening snap.
