Justin Herbert is heading into his sixth year with the Los Angeles Chargers, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. The Chargers open the 2025 season against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, a matchup that has defined the AFC West for nearly a decade.
The Chiefs have owned the division, stacking nine straight AFC West titles while Mahomes has built a dynasty in Kansas City. Herbert, meanwhile, has managed only two career wins over the Chiefs, with his last victory coming back in 2021. That history hasn’t been lost on him.
Herbert’s direct message before facing Mahomes
Speaking from São Paulo, Brazil, where the game will be played at Corinthians Arena, Herbert didn’t sugarcoat the challenge.

“They’re a very good team,” Herbert said. “It’s a great opportunity to go out there and test us. We have to be at our best.”
The Chargers quarterback acknowledged the travel schedule adds another layer of difficulty. Los Angeles arrived early in Brazil, hoping to adjust before Friday night’s kickoff. “We understand we’re going to lose some time to travel,” Herbert added. “We’re making sure we’re watching as much film as we can.”
It’s clear Herbert knows there’s no margin for error against Mahomes, who has knocked the Chargers out of playoff contention more than once.
A rare showcase game in Brazil
Friday’s matchup marks only the second time the NFL has staged a game at Corinthians Arena. Last season, the Eagles and Packers broke ground by opening their year in the same stadium.
Herbert admitted he’s excited to be part of the league’s international expansion. “I love to travel,” he said. “I’ve heard it’s going to be really loud, and I think it’s going to be a really cool experience.”
The Chargers face a quick turnaround after Brazil, but they’ll get a nine-day break before hosting the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football in Week 2.
