Former Chargers great may have played the final down of his NFL career

Following a non-contact injury on Thursday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers, Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler will miss the remainder of the season with a torn Achilles.

Though Ekeler did not leave the Los Angeles Chargers on the greatest of terms, he spent several terrific seasons with the team and quickly became a fan favorite. Going from an undrafted free agent who almost no one had ever heard of to making the 53-man roster in 2017, Ekeler steadily grew with the team in his time there.

His 4,355 yards rank third in team history behind only Paul Lowe and LaDainian Tomlinson. For savvy fans who have followed Ekeler's career closely, they know that this injury could mean much more than just a lost 2025 season.

Ekeler was in the final year of a two-year deal with the Commanders, meaning he will be a free agent next offseason. More importantly, and not in a good way, is the fact that he will turn 31 years old next May.

There have been signs of him slowing down. He averaged only 3.1 yards per carry on his 14 rushing attempts this season and the Commanders were going to favor seventh-round pick Jacory Croskey-Merritt in the running game even if he was available.

This injury — which typically requires a recovery time of nine to 12 months — is a major setback for Ekeler. Those who have followed his career closely know that he won't give up that easily. He will rehab vigorously and be ready to play in 2026. However, the line of potential suitors for him may not be very long.

If a new opportunity doesn't become available, it would be appropriate for him to sign a one-day deal with L.A. to retire as a member of the Chargers, where he could one day be entered into the team's Hall of Fame.
