The Los Angeles Chargers are expected to hire former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel as their next offensive coordinator.
But that move has yet to be made official and the belief is that's because McDaniel is still exploring his head-coach options.
The Buffalo Bills were the latest team to express interest in McDaniel for their head-coach vacancy, but he has since cancelled that interview.
As far as why he made that decision is concerned, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer is reporting that McDaniel may have felt "a little uneasy" about interviewing for the Bills gig so soon after reportedly taking the Chargers job.
"For what it’s worth, word was that Mike McDaniel may have felt a little uneasy about interviewing for the Bills’ job so soon after taking the Chargers’ [offensive coordinator] job," Breer reported.
This is obviously great news for the Chargers, as not only does this pretty much cancel out the threat of the Bills poaching him, but it could mean McDaniel is finished with head-coaching interviews entirely.
This is the second interview McDaniel has pulled out of, as he did the same with the Cleveland Browns, although that was before he was expected to become the next Chargers offensive coordinator.
As far as we can tell, the only semblance of a threat left is the Las Vegas Raiders, who have interviewed McDaniel once. But there hasn't been a reported second interview with the Raiders, so for now it doesn't look like he's going to land in Vegas.
With McDaniel's head-coach prospects having seemingly dried up, it begs the question: why haven't the Chargers made the hiring official yet?
We would guess it's contract-related, although that has not been confirmed.
