Bills head coach rumor is troubling news for Chargers' Mike McDaniel bid image

The Los Angeles Chargers have former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel lined up to be their offensive coordinator, but other opportunities could derail that.

McDaniel is reportedly expected to take the Chargers' offensive coordinator job, but nothing has been finalized yet as he continues to pursue head-coaching jobs.

According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, McDaniel is now a candidate for the Buffalo Bills' head-coaching vacancy and will interview with the team on Friday.

Russini adds that if McDaniel's bid to become a head coach again fails, he will take the Chargers job.

"The Bills are interviewing Mike McDaniel for their head coaching job today, per source," Russini reported on Friday. "McDaniel is still pursuing head-coaching opportunities, but if none pan out, he will become the Chargers’ next OC."

This is obviously troubling news for the Chargers, as the more head-coach jobs he is a candidate for, the more likely it is McDaniel will get one instead of going to Los Angeles.

McDaniel is still a candidate for the jobs of two teams, including the Bills and Las Vegas Raiders.

He had also interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans, but those teams have filled their openings since.

The Cleveland Browns were also set for a second interview with McDaniel before he decided to take his name out of the running for the job.

The Bills and Raiders both have attractive openings that McDaniel would likely take over the Chargers' offensive coordinator gig if offered.

The Raiders sport a ton of cap space the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL draft that will likely be Fernando Mendoza, and the Bills have Josh Allen and offer a chance to compete right away.
