The Kansas City Chiefs are off to a sluggish start on offense this season and desperately need to get Xavier Worthy back from injury.
Worthy suffered a dislocated shoulder and torn labrum on the very first offensive series of the season after colliding with tight end Travis Kelce. Worthy was taken out of the game and did not return but thankfully avoided a season-ending injury.
Worthy was unable to suit up in Week 2, although he was able to turn in two limited practices, which suggests he might be able to return soon.
On Wednesday, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler provided an update on Worthy's chances of playing in Week 3 against the New York Giants. Here's a look at what he said.
Xavier Worthy injury update
According to Fowler, who cites a source, Worthy has a "50-50" shot to play on Sunday against New York.
Sources classify Worthy as "50-50" to return for Week 3 against the Giants, noting optimism but also the need to see him handle a fuller practice workload. "Have to see how he looks with real practice reps," the source said. Worthy practiced in a limited capacity Thursday and Friday of last week, and the Chiefs will ramp up his workload coming off the shoulder injury.
Worthy got off to a positive start to this week on the team's injury report, as he turned in a limited practice on Wednesday.
Last week, Worthy was a non-participant to begin the week before getting in two limited sessions, so his Wednesday participation is an upgrade and, thus, a good sign for his chances of suiting up.
But, based on what Fowler's source said, Worthy might have to log a full practice before the Chiefs will clear him to play. He'll have two more days to do that.
Even if Worthy gets back on the field, it's hard to know just how much the injury will impact him, and the risk of aggravating the injury is another concern.
If Worthy doesn't play this week, Marquise Brown and Tyquan Thornton will likely serve as Kansas City's top options in the receivers room, as they've been the most consistent pass-catchers outside of tight end Travis Kelce through two games.
