For the first time since 2014, the Kansas City Chiefs won't be playing playoff football.
On top of that, and much more importantly, Kansas City lost Patrick Mahomes to a torn ACL, meaning Gardner Minshew will be under center for the Chiefs in their final three games of the year.
Speaking on the latest episode of New Heights, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce shared his thoughts on his teammates' injury.
“He’s a fearless, fearless warrior when it comes to this football thing," Kelce said on New Heights. "He’s gonna make sure he comes back stronger than ever… hopefully the Chiefs can get him back as soon as possible.”
Notice the wording Kelce uses. Instead of saying, "Hopefully we can get him back as soon as possible," he says, "Hopefully the Chiefs can get him back as soon as possible."
That's a pretty clear indicator that Kelce plans to retire at the end of the 2025 season. With Mahomes done until next September at the earliest, it would appear that the duo has played their last down together.
Mahomes and Kelce are one of the greatest duos in NFL history. Together, they've combined for 79 touchdowns (61 regular season, 18 postseason) and led the Chiefs to five Super Bowl appearances, winning three.
