The bad news for the Chiefs: not only are they 0-2, but their offensive line is struggling to flash the same effectiveness it did over much of the last four seasons.

The good news: Kansas City has a quarterback who has proven time and time again he can make plays with his legs.

Patrick Mahomes’ arm put him on the map as one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks, but his mobility is sometimes underappreciated. Mahomes’ ability to evade defenders and use his legs to exploit openings gives the Chiefs a unique offensive advantage, even if his rushing isn’t on the same level as AFC counterpart Lamar Jackson.

As he works behind a shaky offensive line in 2025, the newly 30-year-old Mahomes is reminding fans that he can be dangerous on the run.

Here’s a closer look at Mahomes’ rushing stats through two weeks and how they compare to some of the NFL’s top running backs.

Mahomes has only recorded 13 rushing attempts through two games, but he has been remarkably efficient. The three-time Super Bowl champion has 123 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, averaging 9.5 yards per carry.

Through two weeks, Mahomes has more rushing yards than any other quarterback by a wide margin. No other quarterback has reached 100 rushing yards; Justin Fields has 97, Josh Allen 89, and Jaden Daniels 85. Each of those three quarterbacks is averaging fewer than six yards per carry.

A more fitting comparison for Mahomes’ rushing performance may be some of the NFL’s top running backs:

Patrick Mahomes vs. NFL running backs

Mahomes leads the NFL in yards per carry among all players with at least 10 rushing attempts, though he trails 15 running backs in total yardage, including Derrick Henry (192), Josh Jacobs (150), and Saquon Barkley (148). Still, few would have expected Mahomes and Barkley to be separated by just 25 rushing yards through two weeks.

Here are some notable running backs with fewer rushing yards than Mahomes:

Through two weeks, Mahomes is on pace to run for more than 1,000 yards this season. Only three quarterbacks — Lamar Jackson, Michael Vick and Justin Fields — have achieved the feat.

Mahomes has never even reached 400 rushing yards in a season, so 1,000 still seems like a major reach, but his offensive line's struggles could put him on a quick path to shattering that career-high.

Mahomes has always had sneaky rushing ability, even if the numbers don't typically align with Lamar Jackson or even Josh Allen. The Chiefs star has rushed for more than 300 yards in each of the last four seasons, averaging at least five yards per carry in each of those campaigns.

It's tough to imagine Mahomes' rushing pace remaining where it is through two games, but he is in position to break his own career-high of 389 and could easily beat his career-high of four rushing touchdowns as well.
