The Kansas City Chiefs are in rare territory.

For the first time in over a decade, the team did not make the playoffs. Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes also went down with a season-ending injury and the Chiefs ended up going 6-11.

That lack of success hasn't made teams any less interested in the team's assistants, though. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo have both received head coach interest from teams in this cycle.

Nagy, in particular, appears likely to land a new gig. If the coach leaves, the Chiefs will have to find a new offensive coordinator for the first time since 2023.

Recently, Mahomes was asked about Nagy and the quarterback gave a glowing review.

"I love Coach Nagy... He gave me a lot of ideas to be better as a person and as a quarterback... Wishing him the best throughout this head-coaching process," Mahomes said on Thursday.

If one of the best quarterbacks of all time likes you as a coach, you're probably doing something right. Mahomes played under Nagy in 2017 during the coach's first tenure in Kansas City, so there's plenty of familiarity between the two.

In 2023 and 2024 under Nagy, the Chiefs' offense was in the top half of the league in both points scored and total yards. The unit took a step back in 2025, finishing 20th in yards and 21st in points.

However, the team as a whole regressed, and the offense dealt with some very bad quarterback play after Mahomes went down. Before the injury, Mahomes threw for 3,587 yards with 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

Nagy is now looking for his second chance as a head coach. The first time around, Nagy coached the Chicago Bears from 2018-21 and compiled a 34-31 record. The longtime coach has been with the Chiefs since being fired by the Bears.

So far, Nagy has been reported to have interviewed with the Tennessee Titans, Baltimore Ravens, Las Vegas Raiders, and Arizona Cardinals for their head coaching vacancies. Notably, Nagy is familiar with Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi, as the two were together with the Chiefs.
