The Kansas City Chiefs' day couldn't have gone any worse.
Not only were the Chiefs eliminated from playoff contention, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered what appeared to be a significant knee injury in the fourth quarter, forcing his early exit from the game.
After the game was over, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed that Mahomes is dealing with a knee injury but did not reveal the severity.
Mahomes is set for an MRI either Sunday night or Monday.
"Andy Reid says Patrick Mahomes hurt his left knee. MRI tonight or tomorrow," The Athletic's Jesse Newell reported.
Reid went on to add that "it didn't look good" for Mahomes, though, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter reported.
No surprise there, as Mahomes couldn't put any weight on his left leg and needed help getting to the locker room. Before that, he stayed down on the field for a long time and was clearly in a lot of pain.
Mahomes suffered the injury in the fourth quarter when he was rolling out to evade pressure while trying to make a throw.
The replay clearly shows Mahomes' left knee buckle and that is obviously the last thing you want to see.
Kansas City is eliminated from playoff contention, but now the Chiefs have to worry about Mahomes having suffered a significant enough injury that it could threaten his availability for the start of the 2026 campaign.
We can only hope that is not the case, but we won't know until those test results come back at some point tonight or tomorrow.
